The DevOps Area Matrix

Patrick Debois suggests dividing DevOps into four different overlapping areas as follows2 (Figure 6-1):

Area 1: Extend development to operations. In this area, development and operations collaborate on anything that is related to delivering the project outcome to production.

Area 2: Extend operations to development. This area focuses on collaboration in the sense of streaming information from operations back to development (the project).

Area 3: Embed development into operations. This area focuses on development’s involvement in items that are originally located in production (or are under the responsibility of operations).

Area 4: Embed operations into development. This last area deals with the operations department’s involvement in the development process in a holistic way.
